Hey there, Team Strike parents!

As we gear up for an exciting soccer season, I wanted to take a moment to explain the five principles of defense in soccer that our team will be focusing on. These principles are key to removing options and space from the opposing team when we’re on the defense. Understanding and implementing these principles will make our team a formidable defensive unit. Let’s dive in!

  1. PRESSURE: The first defender’s role is to apply pressure to the ball. They engage with the attacker quickly, using their speed to close the space. The first defender’s steps include approaching the attacker, delaying their progress, controlling their movement, and ultimately attempting to win the ball through tackling or interception.
  2. COVER: The second defender provides depth and support to the first defender. They position themselves behind the first defender, communicating and guiding them on how to channel the attacker. The second defender must be ready to become the first if the ball is passed or moved.
  3. BALANCE: The third defender focuses on evaluating the position of the ball and unmarked opponents. They maintain good field awareness, staying compact with their teammates while limiting space for the attacking team. The third defender must be ready to step in and become the first defender if the ball is played across the field.
  4. COMPACTNESS: A compact team removes the space the opposing team is trying to exploit. It requires collective movement and communication among all defenders. By working together, shifting and sliding as a unit, we can reduce the most dangerous spaces the opposition can target.
  5. CONTROL & RESTRAINT: The level of pressure and the line of confrontation are tactical decisions made by the coach. The game situation, scoreline, and other factors may influence these decisions. Parents, please understand that our coaching instructions align with these tactical decisions, so supporting and trusting our approach during matches is important.

Understanding and implementing these five defense principles will help our team become more organized, cohesive, and effective when defending. It’s essential that we work together to support our young athletes as they learn and grow in their defensive abilities.

I encourage you to familiarize yourselves with these principles and discuss them with your child. By reinforcing these concepts at home, you can further enhance their understanding and application on the field.

Thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to our team. Let’s stand united as we embark on this exciting journey and cheer our players on as they excel in their defensive prowess.

Best regards,

Coach Mick Southerland
